Welcome to Episode 41 of the Gent’s Talk podcast with Peloton fitness instructor Matty Maggiacomo. Matty, named Peloton’s Director of Fitness Programming, infuses storytelling and humour into his classes, which have been taken over 348K times a month on average (2021). Although we couldn’t bring the treadmill into the studio, Matty did sit down with us to discuss masculinity, confidence, and being open to dissimilar viewpoints.
As you’d suspect from a Peloton instructor, Maggiacomo exudes high energy and passion, not to mention peak physicality and confidence. It’s hard to believe that Matty was that kid that wore a t-shirt in the pool because he was afraid of what other people thought.
Confidence
Matty jumped right into how working out changed his life. As with many, he started working out strictly for aesthetics, but he mentioned that the mental benefits are what helped him gain confidence. That same confidence gained made him feel comfortable in his skin, which made coming out a bit less complicated. He noted that once he stopped pretending who he was, his relationships got deeper. Let this remind those struggling to come out that it gets easier once you do. Just make sure it’s on your terms in a safe environment.

Please listen as Matty talks about what he does when negative thoughts arise. He admitted it’s hard not to compare yourself to others because the grass always looks greener. Comparison is the thief of joy, and Maggiacomo stated that “you can’t look at the digital footprint. You don’t know what’s going on inside.”
True Masculinity
The topic of masculinity naturally arose throughout our conversation, and Matty strongly believes that we are long past the era where the man has to be the breadwinner. Matty believes this resurging wave of superiority makes it nearly impossible to establish solid and authentic relationships. “We’re all human,” he explained, “no one anointed one group of people or one sex superior.” We must be open to other viewpoints to avoid this “Top G” philosophy from taking over. Maggiacomo urges everyone to get out and meet new people who are a different colour from them. “Go meet people who believe in a different God than you. [Someone] who sleeps with a different sex than you; to know them is to love them.”
Please tune into Episode 41 for the entire conversation with Matty Maggiacomo as he also discusses his love for vision boards and the art of manifesting what you want.
