The only thing worse than feeling old is looking like we’re older than we are. When we were fresh out of high school, without a care in the world, all we wanted was to look older. Alas, much has changed as the earth persists in rotating around the sun. We are genuinely only as old as we feel, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to look a little younger. As the continued focus is on self-care, gentlemen, when we look at our captivating faces in the mirror, let’s not forget that skincare is undoubtedly a form of self-care. Now, let’s take a simplistic self-care journey and dip our toes into the warm waters of the world of skincare.

Historically, in terms of a “skincare routine,” it has only been for women and YouTubers alike, while we men wash our face with a bar of soap after we wake up. We usually only direct attention to our skin when a specific issue arises, but that has to change. The best (and easiest) way to have great-looking skin, especially the older we get, is to focus on prevention. To best prevent wrinkles, acne, and other typical skincare concerns before they become problematic, we must take pride in skincare daily. That is the best remedy, and a daily skincare routine will also benefit us by keeping our skin clean, fresh and clear.

Gender-Neutral
The crazy thing about our skin is that despite various marketing ploys, skincare is relatively gender-neutral, which means skin problems (and solutions) have more to do with skin type than our gender. So before the “skincare for men” google search starts, the first thing we must figure out is our skin type. The general skin types are: normal, dry, oily, sensitive and combination. Once that is figured out, the skincare journey has officially started, and we can start looking into products that cater specifically to our skin type.
Men Need a Skincare Routine Too!
If you have no idea where to start when it comes to an actual skincare routine, hundreds of videos on youtube will have a plethora of skincare routines that vary in time and difficulty. Another fun option is to spice up a date by asking your date for their input! If you do not have the time for an extended skincare routine, here’s a very simplistic skincare routine:
- Rinse your face with lukewarm water
- Apply a cleanser (rub in circles, wash away with cool water) – 3 minutes
- Dry your face with a cloth that is only used on your face (always pat dry your face) – 1 minute
Do this when you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed every day. This, equipped with applying a face scrub once a week (follow instructions on the label), is a bare-minimum routine that even the busiest men can follow.

Skincare is Self-Care
Whenever self-care is mentioned, the importance of getting enough quality sleep and drinking enough water must never be forgotten. The same basic rules apply when skincare is the topic of discussion. Although genetics does play a role in how our skin reacts to external factors, there are simple things that we can do to help slow down the aging process, even if it’s only a little bit. The boys may want to laugh when we tell them that we have a new skincare routine, but who will get the last laugh when everyone else is starting to wrinkle? Besides, a face mask leaves the face feeling refreshed, energized, and pretty… and who doesn’t enjoy the extra compliments!
