Your New Year’s Eve wardrobe can say a lot about you. If you tend to dress more on the casual side, that’s fine. But know that December 31st is always going to call for an outfit that’s slightly more luxurious and confidence-boosting than other days. Stylish realtor Rizwan Malik, Senior VP of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada and co-host of HGTV’s Hot Market, is here to offer up some trendy outfits that you may want to try if you’re looking to make a statement this New Year’s Eve. Suffice it to say it’s been a tough year for all, so why not ring in 2022 on a happy note by dressing up and feeling good?

Traditional, With a Twist
Let’s start with something classi but with a twist…a turtleneck twist! Take your favourite tuxedo jacket and pair it with a turtleneck for a quick n’ easy show-stopping statement. This ensemble says, I understand the assignment.

If you’re a traditionalist, pair your tux with a black dress shirt. It’s another great way to put a spin on a classic. Don’t be afraid of colour…rich tones, like burgundy, bring an extra sense of elegance, sophistication, class, and individuality to your outfit.
Velvet is an additional enhancer in the winter, and in tuxedo form. Velvet shows you’re taking on an iconic style, but making it your own with this warm and rich texture. If you want to take it even further, opt for a deep emerald green jacket and pair it with solid black pants. I’ll allow that as long as you don’t forget the turtleneck! When it comes to the soles, keep the shoes understated in black, grey, and dark neutral tones, allowing your tux to really be the focus of the outfit. Rules are meant to be broken, and you’ll be happier you did!

Dress Things Up
New Year’s only begins at midnight, which means you’re in for a long evening, so why not get a little cozy? Pair a classic crop dress pant with a shirt and bowtie, add a pair of high tops and a long cardigan, and presto, a New Year’s Eve statement!
For the cardigan, you can opt for a classic black, or change it up with a grey, but refrain from the browns and taupes, which are much better colours for the Fall.
When it comes to the shoes, that’s where you can spice up the outfit with some colour. Don’t be afraid to experiment with blues, reds and greens. As long as the shoes don’t clash with the colour of your bowtie and stick out like a sore thumb, colour is good. While you may have a broad spectrum of colours on, you want the outfit as a whole to be cohesive and leave a lasting impression in everyone’s style book.

Bringing Sexy Back
Bring back the turtleneck! Christmas has its ugly holiday sweaters, so why can’t New Years have the turtleneck? This sleek n’ sexy look says, I am a gentleman who knows how to properly arrive in any room I walk into.

Pair it with a leather jacket and black skinny jeans, along with a pair of suede Chelsea boots and a cream turtleneck for a more relaxed celebratory look. It screams confidence, with a bold clean finish.
Structure isn’t everything! This deconstructed take on New Year’s fashion will leave people wanting your cozy cardigan. Keep the jeans, jacket and boots dark to showcase this bad-boy look, and save the colour for the turtleneck. Cream and beige are acceptable, but maroons, forest greens, and darker-toned tops are your best bet for the turtleneck. Suede is always a great boot option, but if it’s wet outside as January can be, you may want to stray from the suede and sway towards the leather or a water-resistant boot. If this outfit doesn’t turn heads then I don’t know what will!
