We are all finally back to enjoying eating and dining out. So it’s time we all look good doing it too! We all want to enjoy an exceptional glass of wine, but sometimes, staring at a large wine list can be overwhelming and daunting. This is exactly when we play it safe and order our favourite rather than trying something new. I encourage you to get out of your comfort zone and try something fun, try a new grape, or learn about a new region! With that being said, here’s how to order wine like a pro the next time the situation calls for it!

Pick Your Style
Depending on your mood, the type of restaurant and food being served, think about what style of wine you want to sip on. Are you looking for light and fruity, big and bold, or bubbly and fresh? Maybe you might want to try a natural or orange wine? Is it a glass of white, red or something in between? Try to put words to the style you are craving and get ready to explain it.
Ask an Expert
Ask the wine expert, server, bartender or the Sommelier on staff to help you find what you’re looking for. They know the wine list inside and out, and are happy to make a recommendation based on the style and price range you are seeking. Tell them what you’re looking for and see if they can help you find something.
Swirl, Smell, Sip
When the wine comes, the Sommelier will pour a small amount of wine into your glass. This is your opportunity to taste the wine and ensure it fits the style you are looking for. Your job is to swirl, smell and sip the wine – take your time and try a few sips. If you are ordering by the glass, you can still ask to taste the wine before ordering.
Taste & Trial
After analyzing what is in your glass, say exactly what you feel about the wine. If you don’t like it, speak up and tell the sommelier it’s not quite what you’re looking for and ask to try something new. Asking without attitude or becoming snarky is key. Also be sure to not judge a wine on your first sip, try it a couple times and ask questions about the producer, the style, the food pairings etc to gain more information. If you like it, simply smile and say “it’s perfect, thanks.”
Enjoy and Be Open
Talk with the Sommelier and don’t be afraid – ask questions all you want – every Sommelier or wine director loves to talk about wine. You’re the customer and deserve to be happy in your wine choices. So enjoy a great night out, ask for expert help, and learn about new wines you may not have tried. Most importantly, remember to only drink wine you love. Wine changes its taste profile based on the food you’re eating so be open to trying different wines just like food!
