Episode 81 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, with Loud Luxury:
Starting from scratch
Loud Luxury’s story is one of persistence and resilience. They met at Western University in London, Ontario, where they both were involved in the local DJ scene. “We started making music around the same time and came together, and one thing after another just kind of snowballed into where we are now,” Andrew recalled.
Their big break came in 2015 when they decided to move to Los Angeles, a city known for its competitive music industry. However, their experience was far from glamorous. “We moved into a one-bedroom apartment and had to share the same bed because we couldn’t afford anything else,” Joe shared. Despite the challenges, they remained focused and driven. “Being in a new city was productive because it rewired our brains. It gave us a clean slate to figure it out.”
Facing rejection and finding success
The duo discussed the harsh reality of starting out in LA, where opportunities were scarce, and rejection was common. “Nobody wants to talk to you when you have nothing. We were emailing everybody, trying to work with everyone, and kept hearing ‘not really, not really, not really,’” Andrew explained. However, things changed when they finally had a hit. “Then you have something that does well, and everybody is suddenly interested.”
Their perseverance paid off when their single “Body” became a massive hit. “We started playing shows, and people knew the words to our songs. It was a surreal experience,” Joe recounted. This turning point was a clear sign that their hard work was starting to pay off.
The importance of collaboration and staying grounded
Loud Luxury attributes much of their success to their collaborative approach and staying true to their roots. They recently released a new song with Charlie on a Friday called “Young and Foolish,” which they described as a very natural and organic process. “We have a writer friend who was working with Charlie and brought us the song. We got in the studio, and it felt like we could have been friends in another life,” Andrew said.
Despite their success, they remain grounded and focused on their long-term goals. “We try to keep a healthy circle of friends who are hardworking and supportive,” Joe noted. They emphasized the importance of surrounding themselves with people who understand the grind and appreciate the journey.
The duo spoke candidly about the constant ups and downs of the music industry. “It’s a constant battle, always trying to get a hit and work on something huge,” Joe admitted. They maintain a positive outlook by focusing on what they can control and staying motivated by the joy of making music. “If I’m proud of a song, then whatever the outcome, I’m still happy with it,” Andrew shared.
They also highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between their professional and personal lives. “You have to be able to chill out and have a routine to relax after shows. It’s like being on a speeding train and then it stops,” Joe explained. This balance is crucial for sustaining their energy and passion for music.
Looking ahead
When asked about their future plans, Loud Luxury emphasized the importance of staying flexible and open to new opportunities. “Every time I make five or ten-year plans, they always turn out way better than I imagined,” Andrew said. They aim to continue making music, touring, and growing their brand while staying true to their passion and values.
Loud Luxury’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, collaboration, and staying grounded. Their story is an inspiration to aspiring artists and a reminder that success is not an overnight phenomenon but the result of hard work, dedication, and a little bit of luck.
