Episode 84 of the Gent’s Talk podcast with Sid Seixeiro of Breakfast Television:
Embracing the pressure
Sid Seixeiro has always thrived under pressure. Reflecting on his career, he said, “I don’t care if people like me… but I want to keep a similar standard. If you don’t like me, I want to be at the point where you continue to watch because you don’t like me more and more every day because the show’s the same.” This relentless drive to maintain high standards, regardless of public opinion, has been a cornerstone of his career.
Transitioning from sports to morning television
Moving from sports radio to Breakfast Television was a significant shift for Sid, but he embraced it with enthusiasm. “None of it was that hard because I’d been in a certain headspace doing sports forever,” he explained. Despite the new challenges, such as lifestyle segments, Sid found his footing quickly, thanks to his background in pop culture and politics.
The importance of a supportive team
Sid credited much of his success on Breakfast Television to the supportive team around him. “When I got there, like it helps when Dina Pugliese was a very giving host,” he noted. The freedom to experiment and the trust from his colleagues allowed him to bring his unique style to the show. “I always found a lot of things interesting, not just sports,” Sid added, emphasizing his broad interests and curiosity.
The journey to becoming a trusted voice
Sid’s career began at Humber College, where he was quickly made aware of the challenges ahead. “The one thing they were very honest about is if you think you’re just going to get up out of here and get a job in Toronto, you’re not,” he recalled. His early days voicing highlights for the Score Television Network at 20 years old were formative, teaching him the ropes of the industry and instilling a strong work ethic.
Handling the ups and downs
Sid acknowledged the challenges that come with being a public figure, especially on live television. “I’ve had a hard time leaving it at work my entire career because I care about it,” he confessed. This passion sometimes leads to agitation, but Sid sees it as a strength. “Agitation brings me career opportunities because I look at things a little differently than some people,” he explained.
The role of mental health in broadcasting
Discussing mental health, Sid emphasized the importance of not letting online negativity affect one’s well-being. “The trick is that this isn’t real,” he said, referring to social media. He also highlighted the need for a strong support system, both at work and at home, to navigate the pressures of the industry.
The evolving landscape of sports journalism
Sid reflected on the changing attitudes towards mental health in sports, citing Demar DeRozan’s openness about his struggles as a turning point. “It is not uncommon during the course of an NHL or baseball season anymore to have someone post on social media notes saying I need to take a break,” he observed. This shift towards more supportive environments is something Sid sees as a positive development in the industry.
Advice for aspiring broadcasters
When asked what advice he would give his younger self, Sid shared two key lessons: “Social media is not real” and “Try not to sweat all of the small stuff.” He emphasized the importance of staying competitive and passionate, while also recognizing the need to maintain perspective and not get bogged down by minor setbacks.
