Retail giant Walmart has filed a total of seven patents as it prepares to enter the metaverse. It appears the patents, filed on December 30, 2021, indicate the retailer is looking to build out a line of digital products including its own token, wallet, and NFTs. Shoppers will also be able to shop for their favourite products virtually.

According to CNBC, Walmart stated that it is “continuously exploring how emerging technologies may shape future shopping experiences.” Ever since Facebook changed its name to Meta and formally announced its intention to build out its own metaverse, it seems like every week a new player enters the crypto sphere.
Addidas recently announced it’s entering the crypto space and Samsung has built a virtual store. Nike will be building out its own metaverse called Nikeland after filing its patents in November 2021. The underlying technology continues to push into the mainstream and it only appears to be a matter of time before we see more big retailers make the jump.
