The second Sunday of May is a day we hold extremely close to our hearts: Mother’s day. Whether it be your mother, a grandmother, aunt, sister, friend, colleague (or even a stranger), ultimately on this day, every woman who has brought life into this world is celebrated. All mothers deserve the highest forms of praise because, without them, there’d be no us. As it should, this indelible Sunday is a day we proudly convey our utmost gratitude for the woman who birthed us. Lest we take anything away from a queen as we shift our focus from women to men, and Father’s day.

The best thing about Mother’s Day is that we get to broadcast love. We’re encouraged to show emotion, and this is one of the few days of the year that we are allowed to without judgment. We don’t have to hide behind our feelings in fear of looking less manly. With such freedoms, we get to pamper our mother’s with dinner, flowers and gifts; thus making Mother’s day one of the busiest days of the year. Father’s Day on the other hand, doesn’t even crack the top 5.
Where is the love?
When Is Father’s Day?
Sunday, June 19th, is Father’s Day. The third Sunday of June. It is a day for us to show appreciation to fathers and father figures. Many why’s come to mind when comparing Mother’s Day vs Father’s Day. The absence of gifts is today’s why. Why is it that when it comes to Mom, gifts come from practically everyone, but gifts for Dad are primarily gifted only by their offspring? It’s commonplace for a woman to buy her friend a Mother’s Day gift, so why aren’t we doing the same? When was the last time you got one of your boys a Father’s day gift or vice versa? On the 19th, let’s show some love to a father that is not our own! Congratulate a man who has fully engulfed what it means to be a father, because it is not an easy task.
Focus On The Positives
Far too often the third Sunday of June, a day meant to congratulate fatherhood, is overshadowed by constant reminders of the plights of failed fathers. Please, not this year. What we’re not going to do is continue to let this day be subsided! Let’s not focus on the negatives, but take the time to appreciate how invaluable a good father is. It’s time we recognize, praise and pamper the good fathers, because there’s so many of them out here holding it down! What we need to be doing, gentlemen, is contacting all the good fathers we know and start giving them their flowers. Physically and/or metaphorically.
Wish your boy a happy Father’s day, buy a dad a shot, give him a gift, something! A simple “Happy Father’s Day, brother” SMS text goes a long way. Also, feel free to add that heart emoji that you’ve been scared to use.
