Welcome to Episode 46 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, where we sat down with fashion designer Christopher Bates. The Vancouver-born Canadian discussed how he navigated the fashion world and the difficulties of being an entrepreneur in the fashion industry.
Designer
With his brand of the same name, Christopher Bates aspires to occupy mono-brand boutiques in different stores worldwide and become an international success. His move to Stolkholm in his late teens inspired Bates to become a fashion designer. Before committing, he asked himself two key questions: “Is this what I want to do for the rest of my life?” and “If you could do anything and fail, what would it be?”
Being an entrepreneur and a fashion designer is no easy task, and Christopher stated, “It’s going to cost 2-3x as much, and it’ll take 2-3x longer than you’d think.” His ability to get out of his comfort zone as much as possible helps him succeed.

Longevity
Longevity in any industry is complex. Being consistent, creating a business plan for a pitch, and keeping everything in a Google calendar, are some things that have kept Christopher Bates in business for 14 years. He stated, “The business side is as [important], if not more important than the designer side.” He recommends that if you’re more invested in the designer side, partner with a business mind because it will allow you to focus more on your passion.
A very busy Bates knows that there’s always unlimited work when you own a business. When the creative juices aren’t flowing, he distracts himself instead of fighting “writer’s block.” What keeps him motivated is the belief that if you have a good product, you should stick with it.
