Episode 47 of the Gent’s Talk podcast occurred live from Meridian Hall in Toronto, Ontario. We were front row on the red carpet for the Canadian Screen Awards! Similar to our trip to Edmonton for the JUNO Awards, we were able to hit the stars with questions that evoked honest, human responses.
The cast and crew from Brother walked away with a record-setting 12 Screen Awards! The film is an adaptation of David Chariandy’s award-winning novel of the same name. It centres on the relationship between Francis (Aaron Pierre) and Michael (Lamar Johnson), brothers growing up in Scarborough, Ontario, in the early ’90s. Brother questions modern-day masculinity throughout the film, and after congratulating the crew, we asked what their definition of masculinity was. A resounding focus was presented on not looking for a singular definition of masculinity. Instead, Aaron eloquently spoke for all, saying, “If you operate from a place of love, your masculinity will manifest itself.”
Rejection
Rejection is hard, and there likely isn’t an industry that faces rejection more frequently than those within the film industry. As we spoke with some of Canada’s most talented actors, writers, directors, and producers, dealing with rejection was a constant theme. As much as it was agreed that the continuous rejection builds “thick skin,” many admitted it could get overwhelming. An actor’s life is often spent in solitude, hoping for the next gig. Through those ups and downs, the common theme was to “surround yourself with people that believe in you” and to find other creative outlets during the downtime.

Advice
Please join us for the red carpet experience live from the Canadian Screen Awards. We asked what advice you would give your younger self, and we were hit with many treasures. Some of the responses that genuinely stood out were:
- “Don’t be ashamed of who you are.”
- “Know you have the right to be here.”
- “Don’t forget to have fun.”
- “You have to fail before you succeed.”
- “It’s not the speed [you go]; it’s the direction.”
