Welcome to Episode 49 of the Gent’s Talk podcast with Payton Nyquvest. The Founder, Chair & CEO of Numinus sat down with us to discuss his work in the field of psychedelic-assisted therapy.
Psychedelic-assisted therapy uses medicines such as psilocybin, MDMA, and ketamine in conjunction with therapy sessions to help facilitate breakthroughs and insight. Numinus is a company that uses psychedelics to help people heal. Their services are grounded in tailoring treatments to each individual’s story and developing a grounded plan toward wellness. They help with prep support, integration support, and ongoing care of evidence-based psychedelic-assisted therapies.
Before Numinus
Payton was born with severe chronic pain, which landed him in the hospital multiple times a week for most of his life. This chapter of his story began at the point in his life after he’d succumbed to the feeling that he was his ailment. After countless visits with doctors to no avail, he was defeated. He made a last-ditch effort to book a trip to Costa Rica for an ayahuasca retreat which changed everything. He spoke with us about his transformational journey, stating that he was of the mindset that if it didn’t work, he would end the intolerable pain himself. According to Nyquvest, after the ayahuasca retreat, his chronic pain was gone, and a new chapter emerged.
Psychedelics
Ayahuasca is a hallucinogenic herbal drink made from the stem and bark of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine combined with the leaves of the Psychotria viridis shrub. Psychotria viridis has visionary effects, and its active component is dimethyltryptamine (DMT). For reference, DMT is found in “magic mushrooms.” It incorporates the senses to provide diverse perceptions of objects (or events). It has been described as having an out-of-body experience and a feeling like you’ve changed into something else. Payton defined his experience as a literal rebirth.

Although psychedelic drugs get the limelight when examining Numinus, Nyquvest emphasized that the combination with therapy makes it effective. Payton believes psychedelics can give you an experience of calming down the default mode network, which allows for a more effective therapy session. The default mode network is a group of brain regions that are active when awake but not involved in a specific mental task, i.e. when we are daydreaming.
Episode 49!
Please tune into Episode 49 for the entire conversation with Payton Nyquvest as he goes in-depth about the benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy. He stressed that although there are no “bad trips,” the right “set and setting” is crucial. He also spoke about going into a session with reverence and intention. Most importantly, psychedelic use is not for everybody, and hallucinogens should be administered by someone trained correctly in the right environment.
