Episode 87 of the Gent’s Talk podcast with music producer and DJ, Frank Walker:
The importance of balance
Frank Walker emphasizes the need for balance in his life, highlighting the importance of taking breaks amidst a hectic touring schedule. “I had to talk with my agent at the beginning of the year. It’s like, I love touring, but it’s like, hey, if I have four weekends on, I need a weekend off to go back home and reset,” he explained. Walker understands the significance of spending quality time with loved ones, including his girlfriend, family, and aging grandparents. This approach helps him maintain his mental and emotional well-being, ensuring he remains grounded despite the demands of his career.
Embracing a healthier lifestyle
Walker has also embarked on the 75 Hard challenge, a 75-day mental toughness program that includes strict dietary rules, drinking four liters of water daily, reading ten pages of a non-fiction book every night, and working out twice a day. Although he admits to occasional lapses, he is committed to maintaining a healthier lifestyle. “It’s hard when you’re on tour… if you’re on the road and you go to some of these states down south, there’s not many options that are healthy,” he said, reflecting on the challenges of sticking to the program while traveling.
Finding his sound
When asked about his journey as a DJ, Walker recounted his early days of DJing house parties during university. “I went to Laurier for University, did a business degree, played rugby all through high school, and joined the rugby team. Our team was not that good, but it was fun to be friends with all the guys,” he shared. Walker’s passion for DJing grew, leading him to self-teach music production through YouTube and other resources. Over the years, he has developed his unique sound, blending various influences to create music that resonates with his audience.
Coming from a family with a significant business legacy, Walker chose to pursue his passion for music instead of following the expected corporate path. His grandfather founded Magna International, an automotive company, and Walker’s parents met while working there. Despite this legacy, Walker decided to forge his own path. “Growing up, I thought I’d be working in automotive plants and learning that side of the business… but my family decided to sell off our part of the business. I went to business school and started DJing for fun,” he explained.
Authenticity in music
Walker is dedicated to creating music that is authentic and meaningful. He aims to connect with his fans on a deeper level, avoiding the trend-chasing mentality that dominates the industry. “I want to make something that stands the test of time… If I can show something to my grandma and she’s like, ‘Oh, that’s a great song,’ it means it transcends just making a really good kick drum and bass,” he said. This commitment to authenticity has helped him build a loyal fan base and produce music that resonates with listeners on an emotional level.
The evolving music industry
Discussing the impact of platforms like TikTok on the music industry, Walker acknowledged the challenges and opportunities they present. While TikTok can help artists gain visibility, it often encourages a race to the bottom, prioritizing viral trends over genuine creativity. “I feel like trying to find your own sound and take a step out of that box is super, super important,” he advised, encouraging new artists to stay true to their unique style and vision.
Frank Walker’s journey from a young DJ to a successful music producer is a testament to the power of authenticity, balance, and dedication. By prioritizing his well-being, staying true to his sound, and navigating the complexities of the music industry, Walker has carved out a unique space for himself in the world of electronic music. His story serves as an inspiration for aspiring artists, reminding them of the importance of balancing personal and professional lives while staying true to their creative vision.
