Welcome to Episode 30 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, where we sat with international celebrity chef David Rocco! The executive producer of the hit show David Rocco’s Dolce Vita discussed David Rocco Bar Aperitivo, brand maturity, and his new line of premium sauces.
Bar Apertivo
David, the author of three internationally bestselling cookbooks, David Rocco opened Bar Apertivo in the middle of covid. It takes a certain kind of moxie to do so, given that many bars and restaurants were closing during that time. Let alone in Toronto’s trendy Yorkville neighbourhood! With a lot of hard work and determination, David eventually earned a prestigious spot on Canada’s 100 Best Restaurant list. That perseverance inspires entrepreneurs because, in 2023, most of us will be entrepreneurs in some capacity. David also recently launched his own authentic line of Italian-made Pasta and Premium Sauces – which are now available across Canada and the US.
With this venture into the restaurant world, Rocco had the opportunity to work alongside his wife for the first time in twelve years. He let us in on how he successfully mixes business and pleasure, as working with a loved one can often be tricky.

Tunnel Vision
When David presented his idea for a show, he was not met with open arms. Hearing him talk about creating his own pilot (on his own dime) further instills the notion of not letting anyone get in the way of your vision. He has provided proof that if he had taken that no at face value, he would not have been able to accomplish his dream.
Staying focused is an integral part of the entrepreneurial journey, and David describes said journey as being similar to driving a car. “You don’t have to look every 5ft. [in front of you],” he stated, “you have to look [ahead] at where you want to go. Everyday.” He also talked about the importance of identifying your ego. Knowing if what you’re doing is solely for your ego (which is okay, at times) or because it will help expand the business is a crucial step. A step that many fall victim to. Rocco credits his success with being able to be honest with himself.
