Welcome to Episode 32 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, where we sat down with Canadian Country star Brett Kissel! The Albertan-born singer, who grew up on a cattle ranch, took off his coveralls and rubber boots to talk about family, friendships and being an independent artist for the first time.
Renovation Of A Relationship
At the ripe age of 32, family-man Kissel has successfully been married for 11 years. He and his wife Cecilia have recently welcomed their 4th child, which Brett claims is it. Although his face brightens at the mention of children, he is confident about getting a vasectomy. Even openly discussing the male contraceptive surgery will help destigmatize the non-invasive procedure. Having a therapist from the onset of their relationship has been a major contributor to the longevity of their marriage. Throughout the episode, Brett sprinkles plenty of relationship tips that have worked for him.
New Chapter, New Mindset
Now an independent artist, Brett is approaching a new chapter in his life. After a decade with a major record label, he discussed some pros and cons of going independent. Kissel wears the fear and the excitement of this new journey on his sleeve, and it’s evident that there are no plans to slow down. This new chapter for Brett is a chapter where he is very cognisant of his time. With the awareness that time is a non-renewable resource, a focused Kissel stated, “[I’m] a lot more conscious of where I will give my attention, what will be a distraction in my life, and what’s going to be a special addition.”

Self-Love
Having a loving wife as a constant outlet has benefitted Brett’s success. When asked if he is open to talking about feelings and emotions with his close friends, Kissel opened up about the difficulties he’s faced. He talked about how he had to focus on self-love to open up more and honour those friendships. He mentioned that he didn’t have a problem digging below surface level but would only go down so deep because “I wouldn’t want to burden some of my buddies with some of the shit I had going on” or at least feel like he was a burden.
Please tune into Episode 32 for the entire conversation with Brett Kissel, where he hilariously tells the story of how his grandparents keep him humble and how he believes that there are no mistakes, just lessons learned in life.
