Episode 38 of the Gent’s Talk podcast was a special one. We were able to be a part of the 2023 JUNO Awards in Edmonton, Alberta. Everyone gathered to honour Nickleback, and this landmark in our journey was set as soon as we arrived at Rogers Place. Next, we interviewed some of Canada’s top musical talents as they graced the Red Carpet!
Being the first JUNO Awards to resume without any COVID-conscious measures, artists and fans alike were thrilled to be back. We couldn’t have anticipated such an opportunity and are grateful to be able to show what we’re trying to do here at Gent’s Post.
Mental Hurdle
Artists have such passion and spend countless hours grinding away. As much as they like to believe they’re superheroes, there are always days when things seem blah. It’s on those days when we wanted to know how the stars continue to overcome those mental hurdles. A familiar response was, “love what you’re doing.”
Dax reminds himself that “your inner thoughts create your outer world” and “the world is yours, the only thing stopping you is you,” helps Kardinal Offishall. Preston Pablo says, “don’t force it,” when it comes to jumping over those mental hurdles.

Advice For Younger You
It’s often challenging to advise on command, but we gathered multiple responses from Canada’s top musicians when asked. A common theme was “believe in yourself” and “be patient.” Comedian Jackie Pirico wanted to inform young Jackie that “you bomb, but that’s the only way to progress.” Which is sound advice for any aspiring comedian.
On the Red Carpet, younger selves were told to “be an innovator” (Maestro) and to “learn to let things go” (Tyler Shaw). Ammoye said, “don’t take life so seriously,” and Haviah Mighty‘s, “don’t wait for external validation,” was an insightful response.
Motivation
Regarding the spotlight, Ontario’s own Connor McDavid said, “it goes by really fast.” He and Torri Webster both referred to the phrase “enjoy the ride” when it comes to locating motivation. “Don’t be afraid of sucking” was great advice from Jesse Reyes because we all suck when we start. Realizing that and using it as motivation is an underrated skill.
From host Andrew Phung to Boslen to Julian Taylor, acknowledging family was a top priority for most. This a reminder to enjoy your family while you can. Listen as host Samir Mourani crushes our goal; to hit the stars with questions that evoke real, human responses.
