Welcome to Episode 43 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, where we sat down with psychologist Dr. Jody Carrington. She provided her expertise on acknowledgment, emotional regulation, and face-to-face conversations’ role in our well-being. We appreciate the best-selling author’s authentic and honest approach, which is also sprinkled with tons of laughter.
Dr. Jody preaches the importance of acknowledging people in our lives correctly. We’re often able to notice one another, but an honest acknowledgment is difficult. Where the problem lies is that disingenuous acknowledgment can be more hurtful than doing nothing at all. It’s challenging, but Dr. Jody can help with her book Feeling Seen: Reconnecting in a Disconnected World.

Emotions
We explored emotions deeply, and Carrington reminded us that “emotions won’t kill you, but not talking about them might.” We often have difficulty expressing our emotions because we do not know how to identify them. According to Dr. Jody, “The ability to name an emotion, to identify what you feel, how you feel, how you feel towards someone else, [or even] how you don’t feel towards someone else, is such a superpower.” We must cultivate this skill in our quest for better relationships. We learned that the availability for us to be able to deepen our relationships is prefaced by our ability to name the emotion we are feeling. There are so many emotions outside sadness, happiness, and anger; the more emotions we familiarize ourselves with, the better.
Relationships
We are neurobiologically wired for connection and can never automate relationships. This is why the pandemic has left us in a heightened state of awareness globally. We thrive on personal connections, which have become increasingly difficult to maneuver over the last few years. We are tense now, with our shoulders tight by our ears, and we forget to remind people how much we need them. Take a listen as the public speaker expands on the effects technology has had on our relationships, and how technological advancements are not the problem; it’s how we use it.
Please tune into Episode 43 for the entire conversation with Dr. Jody Carrington, where she also discusses burnout at work and the most vulnerable emotion on the planet.
