We’ve all been there. You meet someone, there’s a connection, and you get to know them a bit better. You start to like them more and could see them being a part of your life. All seems great…but this time there’s a catch. For one reason or another, the two of you live in completely different parts of the world.
Whatever, life is short, and you decide to give it a go. Distance isn’t all bad though, and when done right, it can provide you with the space to continually work on yourself while also building a relationship with a potential lifelong partner. But in order to have a successful long distance relationship, it comes down to 3 main principles.
Communication
Communication is the lifeblood of any successful relationship. In an age where the world is deeply connected through technology, there is no shortage of platforms for you to remain in regular contact from a distance. How often you and you partner text, call, or zoom is up to you. There are however three things you can do to foster a higher quality connection no matter how frequently you talk:
- Talk about things that matter (to them and yourself)
- Keep things light and fun
- Make it memorable
Next Visit
Long distance looks different from couple to couple. Some partners live two hours away from each other and can see each other at a moment’s notice. Others live in different parts of the world and require weeks of organizing and planning just to meet up. Regardless of your situation, it’s important to always have that next visit planned. Knowing when you’re going to see each other creates a sense of excitement and anticipation. It can also breed a sense of security and commitment.

Master The Mundane
While we all want a life filled with adventure and novelty, there are mundane aspects of life that creep into everyone’s world, and subsequently, their relationships. Mastering the “good mornings” and “how was your day” conversations is a skill. It’s these types of simple, repetitive, daily conversations that when done right can set your relationship up for success, no matter how far apart you live from each other. So make sure to focus on them.
