With 2022 off to a seemingly rough start, conversations around mental health and wellness continue to push into the mainstream narrative. While it may seem these conversations are more prevalent now, there’s still more to be done.

That is why the work of 1AND1 Life is critical. I had an opportunity to speak to co-founder and CEO Corey Lewis about 1AND1 Life and the work they’ve been doing. “I believe in the body brain connection. We focus on offering free content solutions”.

“I was a former football player with what I considered to be a successful career. I had everything looking great on social media. But I was depressed on the inside”. Like most athletes who compete at high levels, the body takes its fair share of beatings. Corey underwent four ACL surgeries and seven knee surgeries. Corey made it a point to emphasize that at his worst, he battled bouts of mental depression and severe weight gain where he nearly topped out at 330lbs.
In 2018/19, Corey noticed an identifiable need for representation in the BIPOC communities, especially amongst men. On their website, 1AND1 Life is described as a “black-owned mental health and wellness performance company that curates and customizes content, tools, and products to inform, guide, and empower our community”.
Narrative
The narrative around mental health in men is still lacking the support and resources needed to make significant changes. Corey notes that “men’s mental health is at an all time low. Men are more likely to commit suicide and it is particularly high in the BIPOC community”. So what are the tell tale signs for someone struggling? “Diagnosis is important. When you’re struggling to get out of bed and don’t want to do anything that involves productivity, ask yourself how is your mood”. A common thread among mental struggle is negative thinking. It is a rabbit’s hole you can fall into that can be extremely difficult to get out of.
