Prior to his tragic passing, Virgil Abloh was an integral piece of the Louis Vutton operation. The reigns have now passed on to music icon Pharrell Williams. The multi-talented mega superstar will now head one of the biggest luxury menswear houses in the world.
Creative Director
Announced in a tweet on Feb 14th, “Louis Vuitton is delighted to welcome @Pharrell as its new Men’s Creative Director”. Pharrell is a fashion and style icon in his own right and will take over the incredible vacancy left by genius Virgil Abloh, the 1st black head of the fashion house.
“I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new Men’s Creative Director,” said Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s Chairman and CEO in an Instagram post. “His creative vision beuond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter.”
Visionary
Pharrell first came to us as one half of the most influential dynamic producer duo, The Neptunes. They produced some of the biggest hits of the late ’90s & 2000s. He then became the lead rapper/singer of the group N.E.R.D in 1999. Pharell has since racked up 13 Grammys and countless other awards in his incredible career.
He made himself an influential household name, solidified by the successful song Happy, and his then signature oversized brown topper hat. Fashion design has long been one of his creative outlets as he, along with Chad, started the lucrative Billionaires Boys Club streetwear in 2003 with Japanese fashion designer Icon Nigo.
This is also not Pharrell’s first partnership with Louis Vuitton. From 2004 through 2008, he co-designed a jewelry and eyewear series for the luxury brand with then-head Marc Jacobs. He has also had major creative partnerships and collaborations with other brands such as Chanel, Moncler, Adidas, G-Star Raw, and Tiffany & Co.

This is a seismic move in the fashion world and the 49-year-old, near-ageless, megastar possesses the kind of creativity, influence, and gravitas to fill the great void left by Virgil. His first collection is set to debut in June during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. We wait with bated breath to see the next evolution of the Louis Vuitton brand under his creative vision.
