Welcome to Episode 28 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, where we sat down with Canadian athlete Dan Dearing. En route to Paris 2024, the Olympian discussed some of what it takes to compete on the world’s highest stage. Dan talked to us about his similarities with entrepreneurs, being a student and a coach, and believing in yourself.
Discipline
“It’s a lot of hard work. Every day you have to be motivated to pursue your goals.” Dan explained when asked what it’s like to be an Olympian. We touched on his workout schedule, and it was intense. From five 2-hour sessions in the sand a week, to an additional three workouts every week (2 heavy lifts, 1 speed lift), you can quickly notice what can result from hyper-focused discipline.

Mental Performance Coach
What was particularly interesting was the importance that he (and his sport) put on mental health. Dan credits biweekly meetings with his Mental Performance Coach as a staple to his success. With a team of coaches, which also include a physical trainer, a national team coach, and a personal coach, Dan boasted about the benefits of being a coach and an athlete. The way Dan describes how a coach should interact with an athlete it’s clear why he places coaches on a pedestal. “Coaches are present,” he stated, “They uplift you. They challenge you. They listen to you.” But mainly, they believe in you.
Believe
Dan Dearing shared a message to younger athletes, and it’s to always believe in yourself, especially when you’re at your weakest. Please tune into Episode 28 for the entire conversation with Dan and listen to him speak about his unique bond with his partner on the sand.
