The 2023 JUNO Awards took place this past weekend in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and the stars were out. Hosted for the second year in a row by Marvel star Simu Liu, the ceremony celebrated numerous Canadian achievements in front of a packed house at the Rogers Place.
The Weeknd took home five JUNO awards becoming the second most decorated JUNO winner of all time. AP Dhillon performed entirely in Punjabi, a first for the JUNO Awards. First-time winners Banx & Ranx (Breakthrough Group of the Year* winners) together with Preston Pablo (Breakthrough Artist of the Year* winner) and Rêve (Dance Recording of the Year winner) were also among the performers.
Canadian Music Hall of Fame
The evening was highlighted with the induction of legendary Canadian band Nickelback into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. With the event taking place in Edmonton it was only fitting that captain of the Edmonton Oilers, Connor McDavid was the one to do it. The group also performed that evening.
Hip Hop 50
A special segment of the ceremony was the celebration and spotlight on the 50th anniversary of hip hop. Supported by ADVANCE, Canada’s Black Music Business Collective, and the JUNO Rap Music Advisory Committee, four-time JUNO Award Winner Kardinal Offishall wrote and produced the four-song medley. Co-hosted by 2022 JUNO Award winner Haviah Mighty, the duo were joined by Rich Kidd, DJ Mel Boogie, Michie Mee, Dream Warriors, Four-time JUNO Award winner Choclair and Rap Album/EP winner TOBi.
