It was a night to remember for Scarborough. The critically acclaimed film Brother took home a record 12 Canadian Screen Awards including best Actor, Supporting Actor and Director. The film has drawn plenty of praise since hitting the circuit in 2022 and the awards keep pilling up.
Brother, written, produced and directed by Clement Virgo is an adaptation of David Chariandy‘s award-winning novel Brother. The film focuses on the relationship between Francis and Michael. The story follows the two Black Canadian brothers growing up in Scarborough, Ontario in the early 1990s.
The film stars Aaron Pierre as Francis and Lamar Johnson as Michael. Rounding out the cast includes Kiana Madeira, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Lovell Adams-Gray, Maurice Dean Wint and Dwain Murphy.
Among the many awards, Aaron Pierre won the award for Supporting Actor while Lamar, who was recently featured on an episode of the Last of Us, took home Best Actor. Clement sealed the deal with the night’s award for best filmmaker.
The film went into production in the fall of 2021 after the novel’s optioning for film was announced in 2018. It is the second Canadian film in as many years, following Scarborough in 2021, to be set in the Galloway Road neighbourhood of Scarborough.
The Canadian Screen Awards continues on tonight with the The Comedic & Dramatic Arts Awards set to take center stage at Meridian Hall in Toronto.
