Welcome to Episode 56 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, where we sat down with Personal Chef and burger connoisseur Joe Friday. The cowboy at heart is well-travelled, born in North Carolina, raised in Japan, and now residing in Toronto. We were able to discuss his journey, a few of his upcoming projects, and the importance of a father as a role model for young men.
Fatherhood
Joe’s father was a military man, so travelling was common for him since childhood. Although he planned to join the armed forces as a young man, he could not because of a heart condition. Friday was born with a hole in his heart, but that did not stop him. Many would allow such a condition to deter them from achieving their full potential, but he uses it as inspiration. When asked how he could stay motivated, he mentioned that we cannot worry too hard about things out of our control.
He told us that having both parents around was not commonplace where he grew up. Listen as Friday expresses gratitude (and privilege) for having a male role model in his life. His father was able to instill a lot of the foundational tools that Joe uses daily. He described his father as a “controlled volcano,” someone who can unleash but controls it and chooses not to. That control is what Joe models his demeanour after. “I’m a very emotional person, but I’m not the lash-out type,” he stated. “I go internally to figure out what’s going on before.”

Leadership
Joe is a natural-born leader, but he believes one can be taught to lead. Having a leader/mentor is something he acknowledges that we all need, and having a present father is crucial. His father taught him that the superior man is the person who can walk away, even though they can destroy.
Please tune into Episode 56 for the entire conversation with Joe Friday, where he touched on his biggest insecurities, spending 20 minutes a day on something for a year to become an expert, and of course, the best way to make a burger.
