Welcome to Episode 64 of the Gent’s Talk podcast. In this episode, we travelled to the United States to sit with Brazilian National Team footballer Gabriel Gubela. We discussed the realities of being a professional footballer and what it was like growing up with a football legend as a father. Gabriel shed some light on why he retired from the sport at such a young age and let us in on a few of his upcoming projects.
Growing up, Gabriel Gubela
Wladimir Rodrigues dos Santos, father to Gabriel Rodrigues dos Santos, is best remembered for his time at Corinthians and is one of the most highly regarded defenders the team has ever produced. With such a close connection, we were surprised that Gabriel didn’t spend much time on the pitch with his father growing up. Although Gubela praised his father for setting up the foundation his family stands so proudly on, he admitted that being a professional was his father’s top priority. Because of that, he has made it a mission never to let family fall second to his career.

Life after football
Being an athlete has many ups and downs, and Gubela mentioned that his children keep him grounded. Gabriel also spoke in depth about retirement and life after sports. He has witnessed many of his peers suffer from depression after retirement first-hand. Listen as Gubela recalls how missing his child’s first steps (in person) affected his view of the sport.
With playing professional football becoming a family tradition, Gabriel lit up at the notion of his son playing the sport. As his son grows, he aims to teach him that being a man with values and respect is much more important than being a football player. Now, Gubela looks at parenthood with an emphasis on quality time spent. Said without animosity, he aims to give his children what his father couldn’t give to him.
Please tune into Episode 64 for the entire conversation with Gabriel Gubela as he discusses Foot Table. Gabriel founded the fastest-growing sport in Brazil and has giant aspirations to make it an Olympic sport.
