Welcome to Episode 37 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, where we sat down with Jamar McNeil. He’s better known for updating us on current events and pop culture as the co-host of Marilyn Denis and Jamar on Chum 104.5. His recognizable voice is the same voice that helps us get through that wretched morning traffic, so thank you for that! During our conversation, we spoke about negative self-talk, fatherhood, and some of the difficulties that have transpired over the last few years.
There’s a shift in pop culture that now includes discussions about mental health in men’s spaces. Jamar is determined to be a part of that. He’s taken the scenic route from Queens, NY, to land in Toronto (with many stops across America). He mentioned that the difference now is that such discussions weren’t a part of the “masculinity package” previously. McNeil believes that this shift is a product of recent world events, and once you start to look at the origins, it becomes a mental health discussion.
Therapy
Listen as Jamar discusses some of the lessons he’s learned through therapy. He’s made it evident that he will continue to be honest with himself and embrace his imperfections. “[they’re] part of the package,” he explained, “there’s humour in that, truth in that, and there’s also healing in that.”
When it comes to choosing a therapist, Jamar suggests we ask ourselves:
- Am I paired with the right person?
- Am I mentally in a place where I can receive what I’m being told?
- Can I be completely honest with a therapist?
Most importantly, we must remember that, like with all good things, the process takes time.
Life Lessons
Jamar prioritizes starting his day with positive stimuli and noted that we must change our priorities to help combat social media. “We are flooded with negative stuff from the moment we wake up,” McNeil stated. It’s evident what that can do to the mentality of the average person. Regarding fatherhood, Jamar feels that “if you start from a loving place, the answers come to you pretty easily.” Becoming a father is a job that Jamar thoroughly enjoys, and he’s excited to teach his son lessons he was never taught.
