Welcome to Episode 45 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, where we sat down with Ajay, better known as DJ Charlie B. The entrepreneur has had tremendous success DJing across the globe and recently crushed his performance at Rolling Loud 2022. We discussed where he used to DJ at house parties, his philanthropic work, and the importance of getting uncomfortable.
Ajay
The conversation started with separating the artist from the man behind the turntables. We discussed how on the outside, he appeared content, but a different story existed on the inside. Ajay encourages upcoming artists to stay true to themselves “because you can really lose yourself in the process.”
Ajay has done much personal work over the last few years and did not shy away from talking about meditating, journaling, and internal versus external validation. It took time to realize and accept that proper validation comes from within. He has discovered a deeper level of who he is but knows he’s still a work in progress. As his success continues to grow, he is making sure to take the time to slow down and enjoy life as it comes to him.
Mental Health
DJ Charlie B admitted that his mental health journey has been difficult because, coming from a traditional Indian family, “only crazy people went to therapy and talked about mental health.” It has taken time, and work, to overcome the ingrained negative stigma. He commended the spotlight that mental health is beginning to receive because it wasn’t as attractive an option when he needed it most. He specifically mentioned the passing of his father as a time he wished he had gone to therapy. Instead, he focused on distracting himself.
DJ Charlie B credited having mentors and people in his corner that genuinely want to see him win to his success. As he grows and becomes a mentor, he celebrates all his teams’ wins, no matter how big. As much as DJ Charlie B and Ajay are separate entities, one thing he shared they have the most in common is the desire to “pay it forward.” We were pleased to have such an outstanding community member join us.
