Not only has the pandemic kept the majority of us indoors, but it has also hindered many charitable initiatives. The ease of restrictions has led us to be able to bask in the glory of parties again! More importantly, we’ve been re-gifted the ability to give to those who need it the most.
We’re here to talk about the 10th annual Smashfest® Charity Ping-Pong Challenge. Hosted by former NHL player Dominic Moore, Smashfest® will be held on July 20th at Steam Whistle Brewery!
This event will connect current and former NHL players with fans as they show off their ping-pong skills. “The goal of the event is to support two distinct causes that have affected so many people,” said Dominic Moore, Smashfest® creator and host, a veteran of 897 NHL games, and a current NHL broadcast analyst. “The resources surrounding rare cancer and concussions are very limited, so this event is important in driving awareness and research while having fun.”
Smashfest® Goals
As they have both impacted his life, Dominic created Smashfest® to support rare cancers (specifically) and concussion research. Unfortunately, both rare cancer research and concussion research face similar obstacles.
Scattered and scarce data, limited resources, and a lack of information-sharing have hindered progress with both causes. The goal is to raise money for collaborative research to accelerate the pace of discovery. The funds from Smashfest® have helped aid research into rare cancers (with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard) and concussion research (through the Steve Moore Foundation and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Robarts Research Institute).

“So many people are impacted by rare cancers and concussions. Smashfest brings people together for a fun night of ping pong, and at the same time we’re raising money for two causes that are underrepresented,” adds Moore. “We’ve been fortunate to be able to put this on for 10 years now, and we’re so grateful for everyone involved.”
