As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has been a hot topic amongst the tech-savvy and the technologically inept. There’s a growing recognition that international collaboration will be crucial in addressing the global challenges posed by AI, such as privacy concerns, potential job displacement, and the impact on human rights. At the helm of the discussion is futurist speaker Sinead Bovell, who believes that “the best thing that we can do about the future is prepare for it.” The next big thing since Google is here, but many worry we’re about to create a potentially life-threatening sentient lifeform.
What is a sentient lifeform?
A sentient lifeform is an entity that possesses consciousness, self-awareness, and the ability to perceive and experience emotions and sensations. Sentient beings have the capacity for subjective experiences, thoughts, and a sense of individual identity. Unlike simple organisms that may exhibit primary responses to stimuli, sentient lifeforms have a higher level of cognitive and emotional complexity. A genuine concern arising from developing a sentient lifeform surpassing human intelligence is the fear that it might determine it no longer needs humankind. Thus potentially marking the beginning of humanity’s collapse.

Episode 76 of the Gent’s Talk podcast
As the topic of AI increases, we got to sit with an expert on the subject matter, Sinead Bovell. Sinead was appointed to the Generation Connect Visionaries Board of the United Nations International Telecommunications Union in January 2021. In this capacity, she’s dedicated to advocating for the perspectives of young individuals, contributing to the progress of digital development, and providing strategic counsel on enhancing youth engagement and empowerment in digital cooperation.
On episode 76 of the Gent’s Talk podcast, Sinead shared some of her vast knowledge of AI and ChatGPT. She explained that AI’s proficiency in addressing fundamental issues empowers us to effectively confront more intricate and challenging problems. Sinead Bovell dispelled some of the rumours surrounding AI and even mentioned how excited she was about the future of artificial intelligence. She disagrees that AI will take away all our jobs because creativity still lives in the human brain, and AI cannot replicate that.
