The MoonSwatch phenomenon isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Since Swatch and OMEGA first shook up the watch world in 2022, every new release has generated long queues, online buzz and instant collector interest. Now, the collaboration has unveiled what could be its most meaningful release yet—a limited-edition timepiece that pays tribute to one of humanity’s greatest achievements while incorporating a remarkable piece of OMEGA’s own history.
The new MISSION TO THE MOON 1969 celebrates the Apollo 11 Moon landing with a production run limited to exactly 1,969 pieces, honouring the year Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made history. But unlike previous MoonSwatch releases, this model introduces something collectors have never seen before: genuine OMEGA 18K Moonshine Gold.

A watch with genuine historical roots
The standout feature isn’t simply that the watch contains gold—it’s where that gold comes from. According to Swatch, the dial, hands, crown and pushers are crafted from 11 grams of OMEGA’s proprietary 18K Moonshine Gold. Even more remarkably, that gold originated from vintage OMEGA spare parts dating back to the Apollo era before being melted down in the company’s own foundry and transformed into new components for this special edition.
The number 11 appears throughout the watch as a playful nod to Apollo 11. The precious metal components collectively weigh 11 grams, while the retail price of CHF 500 references the approximate value of 11 grams of 18K gold on July 21, 1969—the day humans first walked on the Moon—rather than today’s significantly higher gold prices.
Designed for collectors
Beyond the precious metal, the watch is filled with details inspired by the original commemorative OMEGA Speedmaster created following the success of Apollo 11. The vertical satin-finished gold dial is paired with a matte black Bioceramic case and bezel featuring a gold-coloured tachymeter scale. Vintage OMEGA branding, gold indexes with black lacquer detailing and period-correct typography further reinforce the historical connection.
Collectors will also appreciate several hidden touches. Turn the watch over and you’ll find a golden Moon battery cover displaying the date of the Moon landing alongside a footprint commemorating the first steps taken in the Sea of Tranquillity. Each watch is individually numbered, with its unique edition number engraved into the side of the case and finished with golden lacquer.
Buying one won’t be easy
If securing previous MoonSwatch releases required patience, this one adds another challenge. Rather than simply lining up outside a boutique, prospective buyers must complete an ESTA—or Electronic Swatch Timepiece Application. The online application, inspired by the travel authorization required for entry into the United States, consists of 32 questions. Only 1,969 applicants will receive approval, earning the opportunity to purchase the watch before collecting it from a participating Swatch store. Applications open on July 16 at 15:32 CEST and close on July 21 at 23:59 CEST.
Whether you’re a MoonSwatch enthusiast, an OMEGA collector or simply fascinated by the history of space exploration, the MISSION TO THE MOON 1969 represents one of the collaboration’s most compelling releases to date. It’s more than another limited-edition watch—it combines genuine materials from the Apollo era, thoughtful historical references and one of the most significant anniversaries in modern history into a timepiece that’s likely to become one of the most sought-after MoonSwatches ever produced.
