The iconic flagship SUV is going fully electric with 542 horsepower, up to 535 kilometres of estimated range and a $200,800 starting price in Canada.
There are certain vehicles where the sound of the engine is almost inseparable from the experience. And then there’s the Range Rover.
For decades, the flagship British SUV has arguably been defined less by what’s happening under its hood and more by what you don’t experience behind the wheel: road noise, harshness, drama or any real sense that the terrain underneath you should be your concern.

Which makes the arrival of the first-ever fully electric Range Rover surprisingly logical.
Unveiled September 1 and now available to order in Canada, the fully electric Range Rover promises to be quieter, more responsive and more powerful in some respects than any Range Rover before it. And rather than radically redesigning one of the most recognizable luxury SUVs on the road, Range Rover has taken a refreshingly restrained approach.
The philosophy, according to the brand, was simple: make it a Range Rover first and a fully electric vehicle second.
Electric power without sacrificing the Range Rover experience
Underneath sits an 800-volt electrical architecture and a massive usable 118.5kWh double-stack lithium-ion battery feeding two permanent-magnet 260kW electric motors.
Together, they produce up to 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, while Range Rover estimates driving range at up to 535 kilometres on the EPA cycle.
Performance isn’t exactly lacking either.

Range Rover says the Electric can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in as little as 4.5 seconds, with the 80–120 km/h sprint taking as little as 2.7 seconds.
Those are serious numbers for a large luxury SUV, but straight-line speed almost feels secondary here.
The more interesting proposition is what electric propulsion could do for the defining Range Rover experience. No engine vibration. Near-silent acceleration. Instant torque. And an even quieter cabin.
“Electric propulsion is perfectly suited to the exquisite refinement of Range Rover, elevating the sense of calm and secluded sanctuary for occupants,” Range Rover Managing Director Martin Limpert said in announcing the new model.
That might be the strongest argument for electrifying a Range Rover in the first place.
It can still behave like a Range Rover
Range Rover also appears determined to avoid the perception that going electric means sacrificing the SUV’s famously excessive off-road capability.
Its new Integrated Traction Management system can control motor speed within 50 milliseconds, which the automaker says allows it to manage slip up to 100 times quicker than an equivalent internal-combustion vehicle. Intelligent Driveline Dynamics can meanwhile distribute rear torque anywhere from zero to 100 per cent depending on conditions.

Single-pedal driving has even been engineered for off-road use. The SUV can smoothly pull away on inclines of up to 33 degrees and complete rolling climbs on slopes reaching 45 degrees. And yes, because this is still a Range Rover, it can wade through water up to 900mm deep.
It’s the kind of capability most owners may never actually need, but that’s never really been the point.
Charging is getting seriously quick
A giant battery is only useful if you don’t have to spend an eternity charging it.
Connected to a sufficiently powerful 350kW DC fast charger, Range Rover says the Electric can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 22 minutes. Ten minutes at its maximum charging rate can add as much as 200 kilometres of range.
North American vehicles also get built-in NACS compatibility, providing access to the Tesla Supercharger network.
Range Rover has also developed its own ThermAssist heat-management technology, which is particularly interesting for Canadian buyers. The system is designed to optimize range, charging speed, battery longevity and performance in extreme temperatures, with the company claiming it can add up to 40 kilometres of range while reducing heating energy consumption by as much as 40%.
Range Rover didn’t mess with the formula
Visually, you’d have to know what you’re looking for to immediately identify the Electric.
That’s intentional.

Instead of giving its flagship an overtly futuristic EV makeover, Range Rover retained the current vehicle’s reductive design language, making relatively subtle aerodynamic changes to the grille, wheels and underbody to improve efficiency.
Inside and out, this is still meant to feel like the Range Rover buyers already know.
Those looking for something more individualized can also access the Range Rover Bespoke commissioning program, offering an extensive selection of paints, finishes, materials, colour combinations and personalized details including custom embroidery.
Range Rover put it through hell before putting it on sale
Perhaps more telling than the specifications is how extensively JLR tested the thing.
Development took the Electric from -40°C conditions in Arjeplog, Sweden to the Dubai desert, along with the brand’s Eastnor Castle testing grounds in the UK. Range Rover says prototypes accumulated more than 1.4 million kilometres, alongside more than 250,000 hours of physical and virtual testing.
More than 300 patent applications have been filed around the vehicle’s technology, which would make it the most patented Range Rover in the brand’s history.
Even the battery gets its own digital twin, monitoring more than 900 diagnostic data points to assist with maintenance, while the electric propulsion system carries an eight-year or 160,000-kilometre warranty.

Naturally, none of this comes cheap.
Canadian pricing for the Range Rover Electric starts at $200,800 MSRP, with order books now open. Initially, it’s being offered as a short-wheelbase model in Autobiography specification.
That’s substantial money even before entering the dangerous territory of Range Rover Bespoke.
But this isn’t really an attempt to build an electric SUV for everyone.
What’s interesting about the Range Rover Electric is how little the brand seems interested in making electrification the headline of the ownership experience. Instead, the technology is being used to exaggerate qualities Range Rover has spent more than five decades building its reputation around: silence, effortlessness, torque, comfort and the ability to go almost anywhere.
For an SUV historically designed to make the outside world disappear, losing the combustion engine might actually make more sense than you’d think.
