The new Sperro SV isn’t simply designed to perform in the mountains. Arc’teryx wants it to last longer, be easier to repair and, eventually, become material for something new.
There are easier places to start an experiment than with one of the most technically complicated products you make.
Arc’teryx apparently wasn’t interested in taking the easy route.

The Canadian outdoor brand is introducing System 0, a new framework intended to bring circular thinking into the entire lifespan of its products — from how materials are sourced and products are designed to how they’re repaired and, eventually, what happens when they can no longer be used. And rather than testing the idea on something relatively straightforward, Arc’teryx started with the Sperro SV: a mountain-grade technical hardshell and one of the most complex products in its lineup.
It’s an ambitious starting point, but that’s precisely the point.
“We deliberately started with one of the hardest problems — a hardshell, the most complex product we make,” Arc’teryx Chief Creative Officer Katie Becker said in announcing System 0. “If we can solve circularity here, we believe we can apply what we learn across our entire system.”
Designing a jacket with its ending already in mind
Most conversations about sustainability in fashion tend to begin with materials. System 0 attempts to push the conversation further by asking designers to consider what happens throughout — and after — a product’s useful life.
The Sperro SV is therefore designed around three interconnected ideas: durability, repairability and eventual disassembly.
Built using GORE-TEX Pro Fabric featuring an ePE membrane, the jacket meets GORE-TEX’s waterproof, windproof and breathable performance standards. Meanwhile, its nylon face fabric and backer were separately designed for recyclability in partnership with Aquafil, the manufacturer behind ECONYL regenerated nylon.

But some of the most interesting engineering isn’t necessarily what you’ll notice when you first put the jacket on.
Arc’teryx says it extensively tested the Sperro SV with alpine professionals, including Vancouver’s North Shore Rescue teams, to understand where a technical jacket is most likely to wear out. Those common failure points have been reinforced, while the jacket also introduces Arc’teryx’s first easily replaceable zipper slider.
It’s a seemingly small detail that represents a much bigger shift in thinking.
Instead of designing around the assumption that something will eventually fail and be replaced, you’re designing around the possibility that the failed component can simply be fixed.
What if your jacket is supposed to get old?
There’s another increasingly unusual idea embedded within the Sperro SV: Arc’teryx actively wants owners to keep it.
The jacket comes with three years of unlimited out-of-warranty repairs through ReBIRD, the brand’s existing ecosystem encompassing repair, trade-in, resale, upcycling and product care. System 0 builds on that program by bringing those considerations further upstream into how products are conceived and manufactured in the first place.
It’s an interesting proposition at a time when much of fashion still operates around convincing consumers that whatever they bought last season needs replacing.

Premium products have historically justified their prices through better materials, craftsmanship, design and performance. Arc’teryx is making the argument that longevity — and increasingly repairability — should belong on that list too.
CEO Stuart Haselden describes System 0 as an extension of a philosophy the company has held for decades: building gear intended to be repaired rather than replaced. What changes here is how early that thinking enters the design process.
And when it really can’t be repaired?
Eventually, even the best-built jacket reaches the end of its usable life.
That’s traditionally where circularity gets complicated, particularly with highly technical apparel composed of multiple materials that weren’t necessarily designed to come apart.
Arc’teryx says that when a Sperro SV can no longer be repaired, ReBIRD can take it back and begin the recovery process. Its chemical recycling process grinds the fabric and separates nylon materials from the GORE-TEX membrane. Recoverable nylon can then be returned to Aquafil and regenerated into new virgin-grade ECONYL yarn.
The Sperro SV has also become the first product certified under TESTEX Circularity, a standard Arc’teryx says it helped develop to address a gap in circular product standards. The certification evaluates factors including long-term wear, repairability and the product’s ability to undergo the chemical recycling process.
In other words, Arc’teryx isn’t only trying to make a jacket out of recycled materials. It’s trying to create a product whose materials could potentially enter the system again after the jacket itself is finished.
The harder experiment comes next
The Sperro SV launches globally on September 4, 2026, through Arc’teryx stores and online, with the company positioning it as its most advanced hardshell to date.

But arguably, the more significant part of the launch isn’t the jacket itself.
It’s the experiment happening behind it.
System 0 asks what happens when durability, repair and end-of-life recovery stop being sustainability initiatives layered onto an existing product and instead become part of the original design brief.
Starting with a complicated technical hardshell gives Arc’teryx a particularly difficult test case. If those principles can work without compromising the performance expected from a serious mountain jacket, there’s an argument that they can eventually work elsewhere too.
And that may ultimately be the more interesting evolution in premium apparel: not simply figuring out how to make the next product better, but figuring out how to keep the one you already own around for considerably longer.
