Fashion enthusiasts and film lovers alike will soon have the chance to experience the remarkable story behind one of luxury fashion’s most respected figures. Brunello: The Gracious Visionary, a new docufilm directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore, is set to arrive in select Canadian theatres beginning July 24. The film explores the extraordinary journey of Brunello Cucinelli, the Italian designer widely known as the “King of Cashmere,” tracing his path from humble beginnings as the son of a farmer to becoming the creative director and executive chairman of a global luxury brand valued at more than $6.2 billion.

More than a fashion documentary
Rather than following the traditional documentary format, The Gracious Visionary blends documentary footage with dramatic reenactments to tell Cucinelli’s story. Rising Italian actor Saul Nanni portrays the younger Cucinelli, while Academy Award-winning composer Nicola Piovani, best known for Life Is Beautiful, provides the film’s score.

Shot in Italy’s Umbria region, the film examines the formative experiences that shaped Cucinelli’s philosophy, including his love of philosophy, the lessons learned through playing cards and the generosity shown to him throughout his life. It also highlights the principles behind what Cucinelli calls “humanistic capitalism,” a business philosophy centred on preserving Italian craftsmanship, paying fair wages and creating a workplace where employees feel like family. His commitment extends beyond fashion, having restored the medieval village of Solomeo, where his company’s headquarters are located.
A celebrated international release
The docufilm premiered in Italy in December 2025, earning more than $1 million during its limited seven-day theatrical run. It was accompanied by a high-profile gala at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios attended by stars including Jessica Chastain, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pine and Ava DuVernay. A special screening was later held at New York’s David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, attracting guests such as Oscar Isaac, Naomi Watts, Katie Holmes and Martha Stewart.

Canadian audiences will also have the opportunity to see the film as part of the 2026 Italian Contemporary Film Festival before its wider theatrical release. Cineplex locations are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, giving moviegoers the chance to discover the story behind one of fashion’s most influential visionaries.
