Toronto’s dining scene has welcomed a new destination for lovers of Japanese cuisine with the opening of Shinji, a modern Japanese steakhouse that places craftsmanship, premium ingredients and thoughtful hospitality at the centre of the experience. Located in the city’s Financial District, the latest concept from Harlo Entertainment aims to be more than just another upscale restaurant—it’s a celebration of gathering, quality and the art of dining together.

While many restaurants pride themselves on sourcing premium ingredients, Shinji has gone a step further. Rather than relying solely on distributors, the team travelled throughout Japan to meet well producers firsthand, sourcing world-class beef directly from Himeji and Kobe. Combined with pristine seafood and precise culinary techniques, the philosophy is simple: allow exceptional ingredients to speak for themselves.

Leading the kitchen is Executive Chef and Partner Jia Zou, whose résumé includes some of Toronto’s most respected restaurants, including Auberge du Pommier, Miku Toronto, Kiu and Kasa Moto. Drawing on more than a decade of experience, Zou has created a menu that celebrates restraint, precision and integrity.
Signature dishes include the indulgent Wagyu Sukiyaki, Shinji’s elevated interpretation of Surf & Turf and a poached Alaskan king crab bite topped with caviar. Larger shareable plates such as the Wagyu Kamameshi and Osaka Shrimp Noodles reinforce the restaurant’s emphasis on communal dining, while a carefully curated nigiri and sashimi program showcases premium cuts including o-toro, chutoro, botan ebi, madai and hamachi.
“We spent a lot of time travelling through Japan, eating everywhere we could, from neighbourhood spots to some of the country’s best restaurants,” says Zou. “What stayed with us wasn’t just the food, but the care that went into every meal. Great ingredients, good technique and genuine hospitality became the benchmark for everything we wanted to create at Shinji.”
Designed to be experienced
The attention to detail extends well beyond the plate. Award-winning design studio Odami has created an environment inspired by Japan’s historic denim industry, layering deep indigo tones, pale stone, locally sourced ash and woven acoustic elements to create a warm, tactile atmosphere. A central open grill serves as the heart of the restaurant, allowing guests to connect with the chefs preparing their meals, while a vivid pink-lit corridor inspired by Japan’s nightlife adds an unexpected visual flourish.
Complementing the culinary program is an equally thoughtful beverage menu featuring Japanese whisky highballs, signature cocktails, curated sake selections and an extensive wine list with an emphasis on large-format bottles designed for sharing.
For Harlo Entertainment, Shinji represents more than another restaurant opening. It is a destination where exceptional ingredients, refined design and genuine hospitality converge to create memorable dining experiences that linger long after the final course has been served.
